Intel Core i7-14700

Released Jan 8, 2024$384 launch priceDesktop Processor

The locked version of the only 14th-gen chip that got a real configuration change: 8 P-cores plus 12 E-cores, four more E-cores than the i7-13700, in a 65 W-rated retail box with a cooler included. It is the multi-threaded throughput pick of LGA1700 for compiling and rendering if you were never going to overclock anyway.

Pros

  • 20 cores / 28 threads delivers rendering and compile throughput close to the 14700K for less money
  • Four more E-cores than the i7-13700 it replaces, worth roughly 10-15% in all-core work
  • 5.4 GHz single-core turbo, only 200 MHz behind the unlocked K version
  • 65 W base power keeps idle and light-load draw genuinely low
  • Boxed Laminar RM1 cooler included, adequate for stock mixed-use workloads

Cons

  • The 65 W rating is nominal only: PL2 is 219 W and all-core loads sit there, where the bundled cooler throttles
  • Locked multiplier, so tuning is limited to power limits and memory
  • Covered by Intel's Vmin-shift instability advisory; a used unit needs 0x12B microcode and may have already run degraded
  • CPU provides PCIe 5.0 only to the x16 graphics slot - the CPU-attached M.2 link is Gen4
