We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages people read and how they find the site. Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID) and Google receives your IP address, browser and device details and the addresses of the pages you view; for a site search, the address includes the words searched. Google processes this data under the Google Privacy Policy (see also how Google uses data from sites that use its services). In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland these cookies are set only after you accept them in the cookie banner; elsewhere they are on by default. Anyone can change the choice with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page, block the cookies in the browser, or install Google's Analytics opt-out add-on. The site runs no ads, and Google Analytics is told not to use the data for advertising.

When a page has been open for a moment, your browser sends a small anonymous message to our server. We keep daily totals of: which page was viewed; for the first page of a visit, the domain name of the site that linked to us (never the full address), whether the device is a phone, tablet or computer, and the country, which our network provider Cloudflare derives from your IP address; which products and comparisons were opened and which comparisons received reader votes; and the words typed into the site search. The counters are not tied to an IP address, cookie or any other identifier. Search words are stored as typed (lower-cased, first 60 characters; text that looks like an email address is dropped), so please do not type personal details into the search.

We also keep running totals of views for each product, of how often each comparison is opened, and of the votes for each side of a comparison (vote results are shown on comparison pages). These totals record no information about who viewed or voted.

Daily totals are kept for up to 400 days.

Apart from the Google Analytics cookies above, the site uses: a cookie named inno_votes, set only when you vote on a comparison, which records the comparisons this browser has voted on so the same browser cannot vote twice (it holds only that list, is signed against tampering and expires after a year); inno_visit in your browser's local storage, which holds only the time of your last page view, so a visit can end after 30 minutes without one; inno_searches in session storage, the searches this tab has already counted, deleted when you close the tab; inno-compare: followed by a category name in local storage, the devices you put in the comparison tray, which stay in your browser until you remove them and are never sent to us; inno-theme in local storage, your light or dark theme choice; and inno-consent in local storage, your answer to the cookie banner. Staff who sign in to the admin area get a login cookie; readers never need one.

Like any website, our web server keeps standard access logs (including IP addresses and browser details) for security and troubleshooting. To stop abuse, the server also counts recent requests per IP address in memory; those counts are not written to disk. Sign-in and password-reset attempts on the admin area are recorded with the IP address and the email address entered, for security; that log keeps its latest 2,000 entries. Traffic reaches us through Cloudflare, which processes it under its own privacy policy to deliver pages and block attacks.

If you email us, we keep the correspondence so we can answer and follow up, and use your address only for that.

When what the site collects changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top is updated.
