The two chips powering nearly every 2026 Android flagship are closer than their marketing suggests. Here is the measured picture, component by component.

Every important Android flagship of 2026 runs one of two chips: Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 or MediaTek's Dimensity 9500. Both are 3nm parts with custom-designed CPU cores, both were announced within weeks of each other, and both post numbers that would have been workstation-class five years ago. Measured head to head, the Snapdragon wins — but by single digits, not the gulf the launch keynotes implied.

Two honest caveats belong next to that table. First, the Dimensity 9500's launch material claimed AnTuTu scores near four million; the measured figure on retail hardware is 3.25 million. Lab-environment numbers with unlimited cooling are marketing, not benchmarks. Second, phone-to-phone variance within the same chip runs to several percent depending on cooling — a gaming phone with a vapor chamber will beat a slim flagship on the identical silicon.
Architecture, briefly
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 runs Qualcomm's third-generation Oryon cores at up to 4.6GHz. The Dimensity 9500 answers with Arm's newest C1 cluster — one C1-Ultra at 4.21GHz, three C1-Premium, four C1-Pro — and a Mali-G1 Ultra MC12 GPU. Neither ships efficiency cores in the old sense; both treat the whole cluster as performance silicon and lean on process efficiency instead. In sustained loads the two are closer than the peak numbers suggest, and which one throttles less depends more on the phone around it than the chip itself.
Beyond the benchmarks
Both chips are fabbed on TSMC's N3P process, so neither carries a node advantage — efficiency differences come down to design choices and the phone's cooling budget. Qualcomm pairs its silicon with the in-house X85 modem; MediaTek's integrated modem has closed most of the historical gap, and in 2026 real-world battery life tracks the phone's battery capacity and display far more than the chip brand. On the AI side both ship NPUs fast enough that the limiting factor is which features the phone maker actually enables, not tensor throughput.

If you are comparing spec sheets, the M suffix matters — the CPU numbers carry over, the GPU numbers do not quite.
Which phones carry which chip

So which should you buy?
Neither chip is a reason to reject a phone in 2026. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is measurably ahead — about ten percent in GPU-bound work, four in CPU — and if you push emulators or shoot long 8K clips, that margin is real.
