Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus (2022)
Amazon's 12th-generation Fire HD 8 Plus has an 8-inch 1280x800 IPS display and the MediaTek MT8169A chip like the standard Fire HD 8, but adds 3GB of RAM, a 5MP rear camera and Qi wireless charging. It runs Fire OS 8 without Google Play, has a microSD slot and launched at $119.99 for the 32GB model with lock-screen ads.
Pros
- 3GB of RAM, one gigabyte more than the standard 2022 Fire HD 8
- Qi wireless charging, and the included 9W adapter fully charges the tablet in about three hours
- 5MP rear camera instead of the 2MP unit on the standard model
- microSD slot supports cards up to 1TB, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack
- Rated by Amazon for up to 13 hours of battery life
Cons
- Fire OS 8 is based on Android 11 and has no Google Play Store
- 1280x800 display (189 ppi) is basic for an 8-inch tablet
- Uses the same MT8169A chip as the cheaper Fire HD 8, so the extra RAM brings little performance gain in review testing
- The $119.99 base price includes lock-screen ads, and the wireless charging dock is sold separately
