MediaTek MT8189

Also sold as MediaTek Kompanio 540

Released Oct 28, 2025Mobile Chipset

MediaTek MT8189 is the chip MediaTek markets as the Kompanio 540: a 6nm octa-core with two Cortex-A78 cores at up to 2.6GHz, six Cortex-A55 cores and a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. Built for entry-level Chromebooks, it also powers Amazon's Alexa Tablet 8 and Alexa Tablet 11, where the CPU cores run at 2.0GHz.

Pros

  • Built on a 6nm process; MediaTek says its power efficiency makes fanless operation possible and suits ultra-thin, light notebooks
  • Two Cortex-A78 cores at up to 2.6GHz; MediaTek claims 50% faster single-core and 30% faster multi-core performance than the Kompanio 520
  • Supports LPDDR5 memory up to 6400Mbps and UFS 3.1 storage
  • Pairs with MediaTek Filogic Wi-Fi 7 for speeds up to 7.3Gbps
  • In review testing, a Chromebook with the chip scored 992 single-core and 2,249 multi-core in Geekbench 6, similar to an Intel N100

Cons

  • Graphics come from a modest two-core Mali-G57 MC2 GPU
  • Internal display support tops out at 2.5K (1600p), and MediaTek says 4K60 external output is not supported on Kompanio 540 Chromebooks
  • Amazon runs the Alexa Tablets' CPU cores at 2.0GHz, below the 2.6GHz peak of the Cortex-A78 cores
  • Wi-Fi 7 depends on the device maker adding a separate wireless chip; Amazon's Alexa Tablet 8 ships with Wi-Fi 6
