AMD Ryzen Z1

Released Sep 18, 2023Laptop ProcessorCore i7 check: Tier B

The Ryzen Z1 is the lower of AMD's two 2023 handheld chips: two Zen 4 and four Zen 4c cores, 12 threads and a four-CU RDNA 3 graphics block, configurable from 9W to 30W. It reached retail in the cheaper ASUS ROG Ally model about three months after the Z1 Extreme version.

Pros

  • Six cores and 12 threads (two Zen 4, four Zen 4c) in a 9-30W configurable envelope
  • Supports USB4 and LPDDR5/LPDDR5X memory
  • Launched in the ROG Ally at $599, $100 below the Z1 Extreme version
  • Radeon Super Resolution, Anti-Lag, Chill and FreeSync support

Cons

  • Four RDNA 3 compute units against 12 on the Z1 Extreme, so graphics performance is much lower in review testing
  • Only two full Zen 4 cores; multi-core reached about 70% of the Z1 Extreme in one review's Cinebench R23 run
  • Less L2 cache and lower clocks than the Z1 Extreme: 6MB L2 versus 8MB and a 4.9GHz boost versus 5.1GHz
