AMD Ryzen 7 7700X

Released Sep 27, 2022$399 launch priceDesktop Processor

The launch-day 105 W eight-core Zen 4, running a 4.5 GHz base and 5.4 GHz boost against a 142 W PPT. In 2026 it is mainly a used or clearance buy, because the 65 W 7700 gets close for less and the 9700X replaced it outright.

Pros

  • 5.4 GHz single-core boost is still quick enough that no modern GPU is bottlenecked in most games
  • Eight cores with 8 MB L2 and 32 MB L3 handle compiles and 1080p encode comfortably
  • 142 W PPT lets all-core clocks hold high in sustained rendering, unlike the 88 W non-X part
  • Retains the 2 CU RDNA 2 iGPU for display output and diagnostics
  • AM5 board bought for it still accepts a 9800X3D drop-in upgrade

Cons

  • No cooler in the box, and it will sit at 95 C on anything less than a good 240 mm AIO or large air tower
  • Only about 5% faster than the 65 W 7700 while drawing far more power — poor performance per watt
  • Superseded twice over: the 9700X matches it at 65 W, and the 7800X3D beats it clearly in games
  • Realistically a used-market purchase now; new retail stock is scarce and overpriced
