Intel Core i5-4590

Released May 11, 2014$192 launch priceDesktop Processor

The Haswell Refresh office quad: four cores at 3.3-3.7 GHz with HD 4600 graphics, shipped by the million in Dell/HP/Lenovo small-form-factor desktops. Nobody buys one new — it is what you find already socketed in a $60 used business PC.

Pros

  • Four physical cores and AVX2 support, a real instruction-set jump over the Ivy Bridge i5s
  • HD Graphics 4600 is the strongest iGPU in this family and a capable Quick Sync transcoder for a home media server
  • Supports VT-d, so it works as a small virtualisation or NAS host
  • PCIe 3.0 x16 from the CPU for a modern graphics card
  • Enormous used supply in ex-corporate machines, usually with the stock cooler still fitted

Cons

  • Four threads only — no Hyper-Threading, which shows badly in modern game engines
  • Locked multiplier, and most of the boards it ships in are H81/B85 with no tuning at all
  • 84 W for performance a modern 15 W laptop chip beats outright
  • DDR3-1600 and a 32 GB memory ceiling
