Intel Core i5-4670K
The first unlocked Haswell i5: four cores at 3.4-3.8 GHz with an open multiplier, aimed at Z87 overclockers in 2013. Devil's Canyon's i5-4690K replaced it a year later with better internal paste and higher clocks, so today it only makes sense if it is clearly the cheaper of the two.
Pros
- Fully unlocked multiplier — 4.2-4.4 GHz on air is the typical result with a Z87/Z97 board
- Four physical cores with AVX2 and FMA3, unlike anything on LGA1155
- HD Graphics 4600 at 1200 MHz means a working display output even while you debug an overclock
- PCIe 3.0 x16 and 6 MB L3
- Cheap on the used market because the 4690K gets all the attention
Cons
- Four threads with no Hyper-Threading — the main reason this chip aged worse than the i7 parts
- Intel used ordinary TIM under the heatspreader on first-gen Haswell, so temperatures spike well before the silicon runs out of headroom
- Unlike the locked i5-4670, the K version drops VT-d and TSX — no PCIe passthrough for a VM host
- Needs a Z87 or Z97 board to overclock at all, which narrows the used-board search
