Intel Core i5-9600K

Released Oct 19, 2018$262 launch priceDesktop Processor

Unlocked six-core, six-thread Coffee Lake Refresh built for high-refresh 1080p gaming, with near-flagship per-core speed once overclocked. The absence of hyperthreading is what dates it — six threads is where this chip runs out of room in modern engines.

Pros

  • Unlocked multiplier plus a soldered IHS; 4.9-5.0 GHz all-core is a common overclock on a decent air cooler
  • 4.6 GHz stock single-core turbo, within striking distance of the i9-9900K in lightly threaded work
  • UHD 630 iGPU on board for display-out and Quick Sync when no GPU is installed
  • 9 MB L3 and full 300-series board compatibility, including cheap used Z370 boards
  • Sits on the same socket as the i7-9700K and i9-9900K, so a later CPU swap is a drop-in

Cons

  • Six cores with no SMT: stutters in CPU-heavy games and streaming setups where the 8700K does not
  • No bundled cooler, and it needs a good one to hold turbo, let alone overclock
  • 95 W base power understates real all-core draw, especially overclocked
  • PCIe 3.0, 16 CPU lanes, official DDR4-2666 — dated I/O for a 2026 build
